Recommendations

We would like to see the government review the current Safety Standard Setting Committee and the Standard by a totally Independent body, see Standards

We would like to see better Public Representation on the Standard Setting Committee along with adequately trained medical practitioners and scientists.

Use a landline before a cellphone.

Limit your cellphone call time to less than 5 minuets.

Use cellphones for emergencies only.

Use handsfree kits and be careful where you carry cellphones.

Cellphones should never be promoted to children.

Cellphones should have health warning labels attached to them that are clearly visible.

Co-site cellsites.

1 Service provider with government regulations governing price and delivery etc is better than 2, 3, 4 or more with their own set of cellsites.

Dr Cherry's Recommendations

1. That an independent and objective assessment of the genotoxic and epidemiological evidence be carried out, by independent scientists. This would exclude the National Radiation Laboratory, Dr Bates and Dr Black who have all represented industry.

2. The NZ Standard be reviewed based on evidence and the precautionary approach as set out in the Resource Management Act, Sections 5 (2c) and 3 (f) and the Environment Court in the McIntyre Case.

3. That the Government require public health based committee to be formed, independent of industry and vested interests, along the lines of the UK Air Quality Standards Committee, and be required to set a public health protection based on the principles set out in recommendation 2.

4. That the Government remove the responsibility for advice on the health effects of electromagnetic radiation from the National Radiation laboratory because the NRL maintains the position that the only effects are heating and electric shock and they ignore or reject the large body of biological and epidemiological evidence to the contrary.

5. That health warnings be required on cell phones.

6. That children should be strongly discouraged from using cell phones in line with UK and German government policy.

7. That much safer cell phone technologies be required to be introduced, such as shielded cell phone bodies, aerials and fiber-optic hands free kits.

8. That cell phones be banned from use while driving because they have been shown to cause a significant 6-fold increase in road accidents, including a doubling of the risk of fatal accidents.

9. That where cell sites are within 300 metres of schools, home or work places they be removed and relocated unless they have side lobe protection and direct their beams away from the places where people spend several hours daily.

10. That the government, as soon as possible, requires all radio and TV broadcasting in urban areas to be supplied by fiber optic cables. This would significantly reduce public health effects and allow mobile phone operators to use low power signals to achieve lower signal to noise ratios.

11. That the government require all present broadcasters, including cell phone network operators, to provide the time series changes in the spatial and radial exposure level patterns for every signal they transmit. These maps must be available to the public.

12. That the government funds an independent monitoring company to monitor compliance with public health based exposure standards, totally independent of the National Radiation Laboratory as they are never seen by the public to be independent since they have frequently appeared for industry in resource consent hearings and environment court appeals.

13. That the government funds a nationwide study of cancer and other health effects including cardiac, reproductive, and neurological health effects in relation to the EMR exposure patterns provided in recommendation 11.
